Owner Interview with bjc30
Today I will be speaking to bjc30, owner of the Albuquerque Isotopes. Bjc has been around long enough to put together 329 seasons and 6 WS titles to his credit. Let’s get started.
“bjc thanks for taking the time. What part of the world are you located in?”
“I live in Syracuse, New York.”
“Being in that area puts several teams all about the same distance from your home, so were do your allegiances lie?”
“I’ve followed the Mets since the 70’s, Dave Kingman was the man early on followed by Lee Mazzilli, then Eddie Murray. I was a 1st baseman through my freshman year in college, so Murray was a natural for me to be a fan of. When the 80’s hit I was a big Hojo & Keith Hernandez supporter.”
“I’m old enough to remember all of them and they were all stars of their time. Then would your favorite baseball memory involve the Mets?”
“Yes, the ’86 World Series win was fantastic. However, I’ve been suffering since. I’ve developed the innate ability to back the perennial losers (Jets, Rangers, Nets).”
“I think some may argue the fact that the Rangers don’t really qualify, but ok. So how did you find HBD?”
“A friend told me about the football game. After a while I drifted into the baseball and basketball games. I’ve been playing for quite some time now.”
“How many teams do you like to run at the same time?”
“I usually struggle with one, but with the time it’s taking to fill worlds lately I only have 2 or 3. At the moment I have 4.”
“How do you like to build your teams?”
“Nothing specific, other than keeping the budgets low and flexible so I can stay active in the IFA market. Of all my many seasons, I’ve only given out one max contract. I find that you can build winners without running max ML payrolls so I try avoiding it. I don’t think I’ve ever run a payroll over $100 million.”
“Which HBD would be your favorite?”
“Has to be my Buffalo Bisons team in one of the Cobb/Cobbfather leagues. Was my second team ever and I have had a really good run there with winning records and an occasional WS win.”
“What part of HBD do you like the most?”
“It would have to be the draft and IFA’s. I spend some time on the draft settings to maximize potential ML prospects beyond the first round.”
“If you could change one thing about the game, what would it be?”
“It's a twofer. Get rid of coach hiring and eliminate spring training. It is such a drag once a league rolls and takes most of the initial excitement out of a new season. It's just too long.”
“Thanks bjc, I appreciate you taking the time.”
