Owner interview with friarboy
This next interview will be with one of our new members of Addicted Users. friarboy just joined us this season but has 100 seasons played in his HBD career. So, let’s start the interview:
“friarboy, thanks for joining me for this. Let’s start by asking where in the world do you live?”
“If you drew a line between Pittsburgh, PA and Youngstown, OH, I live almost exactly in the middle. Western PA near the state line.”
“How long have you been a baseball fan and what is your favorite team?”
“Of the four major sports, baseball is the one where I least have a "team." I most followed the Pirates when they were competitive in the early '90s, when I was in college. However, I grew up in Central PA and had many options 4-5 hours away and I followed the Orioles, also.”
“I have boycotted the Pirates for the last five years or so due to their owner's lack of investment in the team. Have been to one game and do not subscribe to the network that carries their games anymore.”
“Who was your favorite player growing up?”
“Cal Ripken, Jr. I loved his game and work ethic. For the Pirates, honestly, I loved Barry Bonds.”
“Do you have a favorite baseball memory?”
“I vaguely remember the '79 World Series. My son is a Padres fan and I guess non-specifically, my best memories were taking him to see his team play and getting them to sign his glove when they came to Pittsburgh.”
“How did you find HBD?”
“The original developers were interviewed by late Pittsburgh radio host Stan Savran's show and I checked it out.”
“What number of teams are you comfortable running at one time?”
“No more than 3. I have no concept of how people would run 10+ teams. I don't have time for that.”
“In which direction do you like to build your teams?”
“I always want to have a couple stud starters but really, I look for the best players available and build around them. I try to be versatile.”
“Do you have a favorite HBD team? It can be either presently or from the past.”
“My current iteration of Pawtucket in DiMaggio. 28 seasons in, I'm in a tough division and have never won it, only made the playoffs 5 times. 82 games in, I'm up by 8 games. More than enough time to blow it but it's going well. Winning the division and hopefully doing some damage in the playoffs would be really gratifying.”
“What about HBD do you find most appealing?”
“Trying to find hidden gems that will help my team. Rule 5 guys, overlooked FAs I can sign for multiple years at a low price... I like trying to get bargains.”
“Is there anything about the game you’d like to change?”
“The dread of seeing your Fielding coach leave and needing to redirect a couple more million into coach hiring. Also, the occasional instance of losing a FA/IFA at the last second due to timing of someone else's offer and not being able to counter. As if a player's not going to keep looking and will decide "oh it's been x number of days, I'm signing this offer I just got!"
“Thanks friarboy for taking the time, I appreciate it.”
